Emil Milan Bird Carving Sculpture Tableware Hors d'oeuvre by ThePapers

A beautiful Bissilon-wood carving used as an appetizer server by woodworker and sculptor Emil Milan.

Made of Bissilon, the server is in good vintage condition with a few bumps (please see picture of tail specifically).

E Milan trained in sculpture and worked in the Modernist style - mostly creating functional items like bowls, spoons and trays. He is also known for his purely decorative bird sculptures; this lovely item combines elements of decoration and function. It looks like it can be used for toothpicks, but I think it is beautiful as an elegant table piece - the lines are incredible.

Emilan's work appears in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick gallery and is also found in the Museum of Arts and Design in NYC.

15-1/4" long, 3" wide.

Beautifully detailed hand carved Black Forest bear sculpture with glass eyes and hand painted body. These kind of sculptures have been made by skilled Swiss wood carvers since the 1800's and were collected avidly by the wealthy and well traveled. In the early 1900's the overseas market grew and demand for American wildlife became a common theme. Bears, of course, were the most popular of them all.

This lovely bear is in great vintage condition consistent with age. Most noticeable is the paint loss to the snout and some light wear to the ears. Measures 9" long x 3 1/2" wide x 5 1/4" tall.
