About Tjomsland--
Arne Tjomsland who was Norways leading souvenir designer from the 1950's to the late 1960s. Tjomsland's artistic style is characterised by soft structural lines and minimal detailing on his creations. He received a Gold medal in the 1957 Deutsche Handwerksmesse, München and a Silver medal in the 1960 Triennale di Milano. Tjomsland figures have been displayed in the US, Canada and Japan.
Arne Tjomsland pieces were made from wood and whale tooth in the 1950’s and 60’s. His works are characterised by remarkably high stylization and a soft, restrained line. Tjomsland started making souvenir figurines in wood in 1954. His first figure was a polar bear in teak. Demand became so great that the producer, Hiorth & stlyngen, eventually serialised production. Tjomsland figures were on display at the exhibition Design in Scandinavia in the U.S. and Canada between the years 1954-1957. From 1957 he was artistic director for Goodwill Products which produced Tjomsland’s figures in both wood and whale tooth. Tjomsland mostly designed motives from the Scandinavian fauna, as well as Eskimos and Vikings.
